Safety Glasses

The Importance of Safety Glasses

Workers frequently to fail to wear safety glasses when they should just like they do with other types of personal protective equipment and high-visibility workwear clothing. Although most companies provide them, the resistance to wear them increases the number of preventative workplace injuries.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported that approximately one-fourth of reported eye injuries are obtained at work while 6.9% occur when doing "other work".

The prime reason for wearing safety glasses is to prevent injury to the eye. While many eye injuries are minor, they can result in sight loss in one or both eyes. Blindness in one eye is often associated to trauma to the eye which is totally preventable through the proper use of safety gear. The statistics tell us that males are more likely to receive work-related eye injuries than women and the self-employed are at a higher risk.

Eye injuries are one of the most common work-related injuries. Research has identified that levels of education are a contributor to the prevalence of eye injuries sustained in the workplace along with the existence of prevention program. Prevention programs should require use of safety glasses and the workers should be educated about the potential of sustaining injury to the eyes in the workplace. These are simple actions that a company can take to increase workplace safety and to prevent eye-related injuries.

Safety products that ensure eye protection are a great investment for companies. It can reduce worker compensation claims, help to prevent days lost injuries, and basically protect your workers from lifetime affecting injuries.

Workers need to be reminded frequently of the prevalence of eye injuries and the simple steps that they can take to prevent them. The use of safety glasses should be part of the safety policy and should be addressed in safety training. Furthermore, the policy should be enforced to ensure that the workforce complies with it.
